I’ve been an artist for pretty much my whole life, though it took me a while to pinpoint the kind of art I have a passion for creating. I still have various interests, though ultimately what I’ve discovered through a lot of exploration is that I love to create art for children.
I’m drawn to this because I love reflecting on the nostalgic aspects of childhood, particularly how children view the world with imagination, wonder, simplicity, and innocence. I’m sure we can all get nostalgic on occasion especially when times are hard. Having a childlike spirit myself helps me to foster gratitude and joy.
It may be easy to lose this perspective that otherwise may be easier for a child. Whenever I get to paint a fun scene I get to live in a similar moment again. It helps me recognize and appreciate the simple but beautiful moments of life. When out in nature, I can easily see whole new worlds through an imaginative lens; flowers with personality, tree crevices that could house fairies, creatures that can talk…

Picture books have a powerful way of relaying these aspects in simple but important lessons. I truly believe that these lessons are not only for children but for adults as well. A story may be about something as simple as loving your neighbor, but we can find that hard as adults!
Coloring books are traditionally for children, though lately they are created for all ages. Why may that be? There is something so simple and relaxing about the process. It helps foster creativity and a sense of accomplishment. Creating coloring pages is quite relaxing as well; I needn’t worry about color or light in the design, just draw!
It’s truly special to see children react to my art whenever I am out selling at art markets. It is such a wholesome validation! It makes me happy when people react with a joyful smile and giggle. Being an adult, it can still be a challenge to place yourself completely in a child’s shoes and create something they may relate to. Each child is different of course, so they may not all gravitate towards what I personally love. Though ultimately, if there is something you’re passionate about there is someone else out there who will be just as passionate.
